Aphorisma de Dewey

"The self is not something ready-made, but something in continuous formation through choice or action."

- John Dewey -

Dewey speaks a relatively unacknowledged, yet truthful and insightful idea here. We are what we make of ourselves; we are not a superficial persona. Our self is built up by our actions and choices. If we grew up being someone like Dio or my little sister, then we would turn out rotten to the core. On the other hand, if we grew up sporting benevolence for the sake of benevolence, the we would end up as someone like a matron saint. In other words, mostly-a-jerk-forever-a-jerk. But then again, this is the simple outcome of if we thought is the same way we acted.

People are not that simple though. We, as human beings, tend to animate an artificial self-image which we use to go about our day whenever we are put into social situations. Beginning our self-conscious days, we generated a persona to make us friends and to portray some image which we wanted others to see us as. As vain children (and maybe even now as vain adults), we fell victim to the immature tendency and belief-system of egocentricity. We were (and maybe still are) paranoid about our self-image and others' opinions of ourselves (when everyone else our age was just as self-absorbed as we were, save the few selfless or enlightened youths). This persona was not our true beliefs, but were our actions. This persona may not reflect our true selves if the persona is not a constant part of our lives, so its influence on developing the self may not be too much. In which case, Dewey's statement isn't so universal.

But there remains the possibility (or inevitability for some) that this persona is perpetuated for long enough to eventually become our anima, or true selfThere are pitiful delusions made reality by some who pretend to act a certain way and have made that initially false persona their true self. They may, for example, feign ignorance or innocence for some nebulous and neurotic reason. Typically, this is to attract attention. But this false identity requires consistent effort and can be differentiated by the anima by the socially adept or experienced. What I mean by socially adept or experienced is that the socially adept are those who know human psychology or are learned (not necessarily schooled) in some social sense, and the socially experienced are those who partake or have partaken is this neurotic act of making the persona the anima.

Actions and internal thoughts and feelings also influence us as individuals and people, and our final self is always changing. Who we are is decided by not only our choices, but how we execute these choices.

Halloweeeen is coming!

So, as we all know, Halloween is upon us.

What does this mean?

Dressing up, for some, pranks and drinking (gross)
back in the day, trick or treating
For me:

Movie nights are ALWAYS a must! I LOVE scary movies, especially on halloween! and every year, without fail, I always end up at some friend`s place or on my own watching Nightmare Before Christmas:

Back home, I`d have a movie night and go trick or treating with my crazy friends (never too old to trick or treat), and go to a place called Scream Zone in Del Mar! My FAVORITE part!

I`ve ALWAYS looked forward to my Halloween tradition with my buds back home, every year!...

But, now that I`m here in college, 9 hours away from home in San Diego and most of my friends, my plans have changed slightly...
I`m still dressing up and watching movies
(not trick or treating, I don`t know where not to go up here)

and I`m doing something I just don`t do...going to a frat party
dun. dun. duuuuun!
 the AEΠ Halloween Thriller
What is this you ask?
It`s a halloween event on halloween night hosted by a fraternity (one of the pledges is someone I`m close with)
to fund raise for the new pledges

they are renting out a club,
18+
(seperating 21+ crowd, fyi)
you DO have to pay
(but the first 100 ppl get in free ;) *cough, cough* hurry up and sign up *cough*)
AND you can wear your cute/fun/scary costumes X)

(I`m going to be a rocker ballerina btw, not important, but I love sharing freely)
anywho, it sounds really fun!

So... maybe I won`t be as home sick as I thought!
I`m still watching Nightmare Before Christmas this year though, it`s already been planned!

Hopefully your Halloween is kick-ass!
AND How are you spending YOUR Halloween?? (if you also enjoy sharing freely)

p.s. if you`re interested in possibly going to the halloween party-club-thing
ask me about details before or after class :)

True Friends

"True friends stab you in the front" -Oscar Wilde

Friends.
Friendship is a bond, a symbiotic relationship, a burden , a blessing and a friend is reflection of yourself.

A friend that "keeps the peace" is just that, a friend in, my book.
A friend that will tell you the truth no matter how it affects you, is a best friend.

Best friends make you think, challenge you, laugh with and at you, and knows when to take you seriously.
The whole "brutally honest" thing might sound unpleasant,
but
I found that my most honest friends are the ones I learn the most from, I even learn more about myself through their honesty.

Say, you`re in a relationship with someone who just isn`t right for you
A friend will say "you guys are cute together" and when you break up will say "I knew he was trouble from the start!"

A best friend would say, from the beginning, "I don`t like him, I would be careful. He doesn`t seem like your type."

Best friends plant the seed to get you thinking.
Basically, best friends are ninjas that plant thoughts in you mind without you noticing.

The point of all of this is this:

I`d rather have a friend that stabs me in the front than
someone who lets me stab myself when the pain could have been avoided.

Being Late.

Being late suggests 1 of 2 things:

1. You forgot        or
2. You remembered and just didn`t care...

I, fall into the "I forgot" category...

The point is, this post is late, over-due, and is probably going to be forgotten,
but, I press on and type away as my mind spits out the words to express my feelings about writing a late blog post, but, because I can`t find the words to effectively express said feelings, I found a video:

This 9 second video accurately depicts my feelings when I realized that it was
the wrong week and
I couldn`t figure out where to find Blogger (it`s been so long that the hotmail interface changed, making my life more difficult)

Warning:
There is one EXPLICIT word, so, to those who do not appreciate profanity, I apologize
...everyone else, please enjoy, and have a laugh :)

I know everyone has felt this.

Bro Party Cave

A couple weeks ago, me and my friends went to a little show/party at the caves by Sutro Baths. Our friend texted us the invite earlier that day describing it as a "cave party." We had never been to a party in a cave so we decided why not.

We left around 10pm that night and headed to the Sutro Baths. The baths are a very popular attraction in San Francisco and I had never been to them before so I was excited too see it. We parked our car up on the cliff side and with the moonlight to guide us, walked down to the beach. It was beautiful. You could see the ruins of the baths and we could hear music playing but couldn't tell where it was coming from. We kept walking and we started to see some people hanging out by the rocks edge and some light shining from inside the rocks. This led us to the entrance of the cave. It was awesome! It was a pretty good sized cave and there were a lot of people there. I don't know how they did it, but there were lights and a dj table and mic set up. There were some dudes freestyling and shit, it was pretty tight. Me and my homies were there for about an hour or so and then left. It was cool and I'm glad we went. It's not every day you go to a cave party.

The S'mores Dipper

Personally, I consider s'mores to be the best invention to ever happen in the history of delicious foods.

Their assembly is so simple, yet their effect on my tastebuds is so complex. The warmth of the melting chocolate mixed with the fluffiness of the roasted marshmallow makes the perfect center for the crunchiness of the golden graham cracker.

When I bite in, it's like sending my teeth on a roller coaster; first, the cart is rapidly shot through the thin tunnel of graham cracker, only to reach its slow ascent upward through the heart of the marshmallow, all the while, the anxious anticipation of the high speed drop through the chocolatey slope is building inside my heart.

Suddenly, I feel it. That stomach dropping fall down the tracks of crunchy almonds sends me through the loops of crackery flakes, causing fireworks inside my heart and mouth. I loop the loops and a smile spreads across my face, my eyes agape with joy and exhilaration.

And just like that, it's over. The forever-long wait in line has finally paid off in the over-too-soon ride known as The S'mores-Dipper. Obviously, I find myself returning to the line for a second and third ride, because no one can experience the warm, crunchy decadence that is the s'more just once.

The Happiest Place on Earth

Time goes by so fast that we tend to not realize it’s passing through so quickly. We wish that we can just go back in time, and relive our whole childhood. Through these past few years, we’ve received quite an amount of stress regarding college, and what the future has in store for us. Having to experience that, we can only wish that it were possible to go back in time, and re-experience everything we have done as a young child. Sadly, it’s scientifically impossible to go back in time. Therefore, as a young adult who grew up too quickly I loved reliving my childhood at the happiest place on earth…Disneyland!

Disneyland is a popular theme amusement park where Walt Disney characters come to life. It doesn’t carry the slogan of “the happiest place on earth” for no reason. As soon as you arrive, you will feel like you’re living in a fairytale. Disneyland has created this fairytale image for children, and adults. Close your eyes, and listen to your surroundings. You’ll hear children laughing, roller coasters speeding through, and cheerful parades occurring throughout the place. Look at your surroundings. You will instantly notice how amazing the park is. You’ll be amazed on how beautiful the castles are structured, and how well the streets are made to have that fairytale image. You will also finally get to meet all those Walt Disney characters you’ve always dreamed of meeting as a child. You will feel the thrill of the rides, and enjoy the atmosphere it’s giving off. Though it may be a bit expensive, the food they sell is amazing. Time passes by so quickly, it feels like the hours you’ve spent at Disneyland was only just for a few minutes. Memories are made, the hilarious jokes are spoken, and relationships become closer.

Even as an adult, I feel like there is a magical atmosphere at Disneyland. It may be difficult to explain, but the best way to experience it is to visit Disneyland and enjoy the vibe.
